Streetcar in Sapporo
Hello. My name is Sato Yoshiko. My speech title is "Streetcar in¡¡Sapporo".
Have you ever ridden on the Streetcar in Sapporo? I think some people have¡¡used it when they went to Access Camp.
I started to use THE Streetcar when I moved to the place where I live now¡¡about 22 years ago.
I can go to the nearest streetcar stop within a few minutes on foot, so it¡¡is very close.
I always take a Streetcar, when I go to downtown.
I used to go to cram school when I was a jr. high student
and to go to high school by Streetcar. Now I take the treetcar to commute to my workplace.
Using the Streetcar has been my most familiar and necessary means of transportation throughout my life.
I take the streetcar everyday so I know there are a lot of
inconveniences.
First, it is very very crowded during the morning rush hour. I have to let a few streetcars go by because they are so crowded.
It sometimes takes a lot of time to get a Streetcar.

Even if I manage to get on, I am awfully squeezed, because
it is so heavily crowded.
Also many cars stand in the Streetcar's path, it is hard or the Streetcar to go forward smoothly. It takes more time to get to a destination and it is very stressful for passengers to see this disturbance.

There are more inconveniences about A Streetcar. Some passengers have bad manners, there are no racks inside and
so on.
I have made comments about them to the authority, but nothing seems to have improved so far.

However I cannot say I hate the streetcar.
I often think about this.
Of course there are several benefits to using a Streetcar. Ecologically, it is less expensive transportation and we can enjoy the towns scenery leisurely.
Finally I hit upon the conclusive reason. The reason it is my favorite lies in that it has become a part of my life to see and get on the Streetcar.
I get so accustomed to the Streetcar, I cannot help having
a warm feeling.
I cannot imagine Sapporo City without a Streetcar.

That is why I accept these inconveniences and ride my
familiar Streetcar.

Although I know many streetcar passengers do not like it, I hope these inconveniences will be a kind of charm for them, like THE Cable Car of San Francisco, in the future. And
Streetcar will forever survive in Sapporo.

Thank you very much for listening
