Have you watched the movie "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakusi"?
I like it. Not because I simpathize with the theme, but I like the background art. A unique world full of imagination.

The director is Miyazaki Hayao, famous for his "MononokeHime". He is also famous for his speaking ill of Tezuka Osamu, another giant in Japanese animation.I didn't know why he does this.
Recently I read some books about Japanese animation industry. And I think I got some of the answers.

First,Tezuka was a famous Manga artist himself. But he didn't seem to know much about making animated films. Making animated films requires different skills from drawing Manga. But he didn't have enough sense to understand this.
When his animated film"Atomu" was aired on TV in 1963, people really like it. But Miyazaki and his colleagues at ToeiAnimation couldn't believe their eyes. The quality of the film was horrible. But the audience's enthusiasm despite its low quality upset Toei.

Secondly, Tezuka agreed to make "Atomu" on a very very low budget. When "Atomu" was made, they say the budget was about 550,000 yen for a thirty-munite episode. Of course it was unbelievably cheap. But Tezuka was really famous at that time, so it became the industry standard.

Do you know how many drawings are needed to make a thirty-munite episode? Three thousand at least. And it is said one good animator can draw about thirty to fifty drawings per day. Not only drawings you need many many people to make animated films. Toei thought it was not fair to make all the staff work on such a low budget.
So far this bad tradition has been successful. Many people are still working in this industry despite its low wages because they just love animation.

Miyazaki and Tezuka are both unique and have had great influence on the Japanese animation industry. But their philosophies about making animated films are totaly deferent.
And now I know some of the reasons why Miyazaki doesn't like Tezuka. It makes watching his films more interesting for me.
